Insurance as a Career

Here are some statistics to encourage you to start a career in insurance in Ohio:

1. According to the Ohio Insurance Institute, there are more than 275 insurance companies based in Ohio with jobs and financial security provided to more than 132,000 workers and growing.

2. Ohio ranks 7th in overall insurance employment and 2nd within the property and casualty insurance field out of all 50 states.

3. Ohio's insurance industry offers many career opportunities who are paid on average 50% higher than other private sector employees around the state.

4. According to the Ohio Department of Insurance, as one of Ohio's largest employment sectors and economic engines, the insurance industry is growing steadily while also experiencing a wave of retirements. According to a Regionomics study, the state is projected to see demand for 108,000 insurance positions by 2031.

5. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says the average salary for an Insurance Agent is $79,940 per year.

6. Approximately half of the US insurance workforce is expected to retire by 2038, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, opening the door to over 400,000 vacancies in a field that relies heavily on institutional expertise.

7. The numbers are terrible. More than 25% of insurance professionals are over the age of 55, while less than 25% of the industry is under the age of 35.

Here are 10 reasons to start a career in insurance:

1. Job Security & Stability: Insurance is “essential” — people need coverage for homes, cars, health, businesses, etc., in both good times and bad. That tends to insulate the industry somewhat from economic downturns.

2. Growing Demand/Workforce Needs: With many current professionals nearing retirement (see statistics above), there will be a significant need for new, younger talent in the next few years. That means opportunity.

3. Diverse Roles & Specializations: There are many different kinds of roles: underwriting, claims, risk management, actuarial science, customer service, policy design, compliance, technology, data analytics, sales/distribution, etc. So your skills (quantitative, people, technical, legal, etc.) can find a home.

4. Opportunity for Advancement & Growth: Because of the upcoming retirements and gaps in many organizations, people who enter now can often move up more quickly into senior roles. Also, continuous learning (regulatory, risk, product innovation) means growth.

5. Good Compensation & Benefits: Many insurance roles — particularly technical ones (actuaries, risk analytics, underwriting, etc.) or sales roles with commissions — can pay well. Also many companies offer benefits, flexible work, sometimes strong retirement or pension plans.

6. Flexibility & Work-Life Balance: Hybrid or remote work options are increasingly available, flexible hours in some roles, and in some sales roles you can manage your own time to a degree.

7. Impact & Helping Others: Insurance protects people, families, businesses when things go wrong — disasters, accidents, health issues. It has social value. For many this gives a deeper sense of meaning.

8. Innovation & Technological Change: The insurance field is changing. New technologies (data analytics, AI, modeling, digital policy delivery), changes in consumer expectations, climate risk, regulatory changes — there's room to work at the cutting edge of problems.

9. Lifelong Learning & Skills Building: Because products, regulations, risk landscapes (e.g. climate, cyber, health) evolve, insurance professionals receive ongoing education and certification. This keeps the work intellectually engaging.

10. Opportunity to Own or Be Entrepreneurial: Many insurance roles — especially in sales, agency ownership, brokerage — allow you to build something of your own, manage your business, scale, earn via commission/renewals, referals, etc. If you're entrepreneurial, there is room. Also ancillary services and consulting in insurance are growing.

Pre-Licensing Education

Ohio resident agent applicants must complete a pre-licensing education program from an Ohio approved pre-licensing provider, prior to taking an examination. The educational requirements may be met by either completing a 20-hour classroom course for each line of insurance (property, casualty, accident/health, life) or successfully completing an approved self-study course. If you want a property and casualty or health, life, accident license, then each class is 40 hours total. We do not offer single line classes, only the combined classes.

Upon completing the required pre-licensing education program, applicants will be issued a course completion certificate for each line of authority completed (Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, or Surety Bail Bond). This certificate is valid for a period of 180 calendar days, and the corresponding exam must be successfully completed during this period. Applicants will not be admitted to an exam without the original, unaltered course completion certificate(s) for each corresponding line of authority. If a student is taking a combined exam, they will need to submit two-course completion certificates (one for each line of authority).

* Public insurance adjuster and title applicants are not required to complete pre-license education and therefore may not have a course completion certificate.
